Quality Rentals & Expert Advice

We don’t just hand you a boat; we make sure you are outfitted correctly. Our staff provides expert advice on local waterways, safety requirements, and proper car-topping techniques to ensure your trip starts smoothly.

Every Rental Includes

Paddles: Sized to you and included with every boat.

PFDs: Included, or bring your own comfortable paddling vest.

Safety Gear: Fully compliant Transport Canada kits (heaving line, whistle, bailer).

Transport: Foam blocks and camlock straps to safely secure the boat to your vehicle.

While Coast Guard law only requires a PFD to be on board, OVCK rental policy requires all paddlers to wear their PFD at all times while on the water.

Safety Requirements & Gear

Mandatory PFD & Safety Requirements

  1. You are required by law to carry a sound signalling device or appliance (e.g. a pealess whistle) with you when you are in a canoe or kayak. Also required are an approved PFD per person, 15 metres of buoyant heaving line, a paddle and a bailer or pump (sea kayaks). These items are included in your rental.

  2. If you are wearing a Self-Inflating PFD you must carry an approved PFD on board as well.

  3. Mandatory PFD Use: All renters and passengers must wear a properly fitted, Canadian-approved PFD at all times while on the water.

  4. You are also required to have a waterproof light-signalling device, such as a waterproof flashlight (Not currently included in the Rental).

Bring your own gear? Here is what we offer, include and why:

PFDs: We provide PFDs specifically designed for paddling canoes and kayaks. Standard boating PFDs can be restrictive and uncomfortable for active paddling, so we highly recommend using the specialized paddling vests included with your rental.

Safety Gear: We include a throw line that is readily available and will throw. It is used to rescue or be rescued. The bailer has a handle and will scoop much more than the 750 ml volume required. Our pealess whistles are sterilized after every rental. If you choose to bring your own store-bought safety kit, please ensure all components are fully functional and your flashlight contains working batteries to comply with regulations.

Tie-Down Gear: We supply foam blocks in various sizes to safely load your rental onto vehicles with or without a roof rack. We also provide easy-to-use camlock straps that secure the boat without scratching the hull. Ratchet straps are strictly prohibited.
